There Was A ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ ~Musical ~ Theatre ~Entertainment

One of favourite Christmas song is ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’. This song was sung many times in the musical ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ at Grimsby Auditorium
Yes you read that right, a musical! I was not sure what to expect. I love musicals, but what would this be like? Would it be too cheesy, even for me? Probably not, but it has been a tough few months and I did not know how much happiness I could take.

Have you seen any of the film versions on ‘Miracle on 34 the Street’? It is one of the only films that I actually enjoy the remake as much as the original.  The most modern remake was in 1994  starring Richard Attenborough and Mara Wilson and, for me, is the epitome of Christmas.

The stage musical is based on the 1994 version. It has some lovely costumes, based on 1950/60 era. Miracle on 34th Street has songs by Meredith Wilson.  ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’, ‘Macy’s Parade’ and ‘Here’s Love’ are particular favourites.

The scenery was very simple but well executed for scene changes. Loved the candy canes handles for moving the trucks around.

James Murphy was excellent as Kris Kringle. He looked just like a Santa should. It is a shame his character was not able to be explored more, so you really cared when in the story he went to prison and in court. The story should revolve around him, rather than the romance of the mother and neighbour.

The young girl was played by Ceris Hine. I thought it would annoy me that the actress was a lot older than the age she was playing, but after the first couple of songs this could easily be overlooked.

The ending however is beautiful and incorporates a snow machine, from the roof, sending snow over the audience.

I do not think this is suitable for young children unless they like musicals and can sit for two and a half hours. There is not an interaction with the audience show. It is not a pantomime.

I am a little ashamed to say that I had a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat at the finale. {irate Mick asked me why and I answered ‘If only life could be this perfect!’.

This particular tour has a limited run but I am sure there will be subsequent tours so I would recommend to catch it at a theatre near you when you can. It is never too early for some Christmas magic!
