Dame Vera Lynn ~A National Treasure

It is with sadness that I write of the passing of Dame Vera Lynn.

Dame Vera Lynn is, in my eyes, a national treasure. Born 20th March 1917, which at the time of her passing made her 103!  I reported on her 100th birthday We’ll Meet Again! Happy 100th Birthday Dame Vera Lynn ~Entertainment ~Music

Vera Lynn made her name initially mainly on the radio and singing with the big bands such as the Joe Loss Orchestra.

She recorded many of the songs that she sang on the radio and it was these songs that would become anthems for people separated in the war. Songs such as ‘The White Cliffs Of Dover’, ‘Wish Me Luck’ and of course ‘We’ll Meet Again’ took on deep meaning to people ravaged by the horrors of war.

The song ‘We’ll Meet Again’ has had a resurgence recently due to the Corona Virus as people have again been forced to be separated from loved ones and, as they did over 75 years ago, turned to the lyrics of the song ‘We’ll Meet Again’ to give hope and send love to friends and family.

Vera Lynn will always be remembered as an important part of the war effort. She joined ENSA and traveled all over to entertain the troops, including Burma. It was from here she became beloved as ‘The Forces Sweetheart’

Vera Lynn has kept her label as the forces sweetheart throughout her advancing years, performing with many Hollywood stars, including Bing Crosby and Judy Garland and British Stars, such as Morecambe and Wise, along the way. She was awarded an OBE in 1969, a dame in 1975 and a Companion of Honour in 2016. On her 100th birthday there was a concert in her honour at the London Palladium.

This year Vera became the oldest artist ever on the official album charts.

Vera Lynn deserves to be remembered for many, many years to come for her important contribution to the morale of so many people throughout her life.

I wish to thank her for her contribution to variety and music and maybe tonight there will bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover over even a nightingale in Berkeley Square.
