Pirate Mick and I were lucky enough to be given an afternoon tea voucher for ‘Uncle Henry’s’ farm shop and cafe, in Gainsborough, for Christmas. Due to the year we have had with the lock down August was the first chance we have had to use it.
I have visited many times before and have left a review on here but knew that things would be different due to the restrictions.
I rang to book a table and was asked questions and explained the procedure to follow. I was informed that masks would need to be worn on entry, which door to go to and that tables were now outside.
I had booked the table for 2.30pm and we arrived just five minutes before, as we had been advised wearing our masks. We entered the cafe entrance, which is all marked out where to stand and was greeted and shown to our table outside. I would suggest taking a jacket even if it is warm when you set off as the weather can change so quickly.
We were asked if we would like tea or coffee and we both chose coffee, which was brought straight away in separate pots.
The afternoon tea was presented on a cake stand. There were choices of sandwiches, fresh salmon and cream cheese, ham and chutney, avocado and houmous and chicken with green pesto mayo, mini sausage rolls and quiche tart with salad dressing. On the next level there was lemon drizzle, a chocolate and raisin cake and white chocolate cup cakes. It was finished with a cream and jam scone. Here raises the big question, ‘Do you eat your scone the Devon or Cornwall way?’ I am definitely a Devon girl and place the cream on first and always finish with the jam on top!
I must admit everything was delicious and a lot home made. In fact there was no way we could eat it all but they were very obliging on giving us a cake box to bring some of the cakes home. Which was perfect as it meant I could have a tasty treat at home as well!
I can not fault any of the staff on all the procedures they have put into place to keep everybody safe. You do have to book if you want to eat in the restaurant/cafe but there is a takeaway available that you can take outside to the play area. There is also a small garden shop and a maize maze, which seems very popular but does need to be booked.
The farm shop is open but only allows eight people in at one time so be prepared to wait outside.
Luckily the weather was kind for us and we had a very pleasant and certainly delicious afternoon on the farm.
