I was very upset to hear of the passing of the wonderful Barbara Windsor on 10th December 2020, aged 83 years old.
Sadly for the last few years she has been battling the cruel disease of Dementia. This is a terrible condition that I have first hand experience of due to a few family members that are affected and the terrible disease leaves people a shell of their former self.
Barbara Windsor has always been one of my idols. I can not remember a time she was not a star in my family. The Carry On films were a staple in the family and probably the inspiration of many an inappropriate joke. Barbara Windsor, appearing in nine of the Carry On franchise films was classed as one of the main cast members and one of the first ‘working class’ glamourous women that I became aware of with her cheeky wiggle and giggle. Being blonde and under 5 foot tall I really felt a connection with her and would had given anything to have her very ample assets!! Her bra fling , from ‘Carry On Camping’ will be the scene that is shown when discussing Carry On films for years and years to come.
Barbara was a great friend of my other idol ‘Danny La Rue’ and performed with him in London nightclub venues and knew him from when she was a teenager. I love the television programme of the stage show ‘Come Spy With Me’ that Barbara starred in Danny. You can catch it on ‘You Tube’ and if you love drag, variety and light entertainment then you can not go wrong watching this. Is showcases both talents expertly.
Barbara Windsor loved variety and entertainment and seem to be such a genuine person that never seemed to forget where she came from or the fact that the public absolutely loved her and she, in turn, loved us back
Her private life seemed like a soap opera in itself and it is well documented that she was involved with The Krays through her husband Ronnie Knight. She found happiness both professionally, thorough portraying the role of ‘Peggy, “Get Out Of My Pub” Mitchell’ in East Enders and in her private life with her third husband Scott Mitchell.
The wonderful Bluebeany has produced a wonderful poster print of ‘Beautiful Babs’ I can not wait to order my copy and hang it in pride of place. A percentage of the profits will be donated to Butterflies , a memory support group in Hull.
If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one, want to find out more information or donate to the cause then please take a look at Dementia UK
