Happy New Year!! Well what a year that was. I hate to see time go but felt we needed to get rid of 2020 to give us all a glimmer of hope for the future. I hope things will improve for us all in this New Year.
There are many different superstitions at New Year including one about letting the New Year in. This can be opening a window or door as the clock strikes twelve. In some places it is customary to open the back door, to let the old year out, and open the front door, to let the new year in. I remember my Grandad going out the back door and in the front carrying a piece of coal, that was meant to bring luck in the New Year.
If you desire new clothes throughout the year then you should make sure you are wearing new clothes on New Year’s Day and then you will have plenty of clothes throughout the year however, and this is the superstition that my family followed is to never put on a wash on New Year’s Day. Apparently, on investigation, it is a fishing superstition and this makes sense. It was thought you would wash a person out to sea and living near the sea and in a fishing port this was obviously why it was passed down my family in tradition. It was probably a wise person that invented this tradition however as a way not to have to do housework on at least one day in the year.
The only custom I continue to observe is at New Year get out the years calendar and hang it on the wall. It should never be hung on the wall before the clock chimes the start of the New Year. I also know somebody who will not cross off the days on a calendar until that day is completely over fearing that it brings bad luck for the rest of the day.
I was lucky to receive the La Voix Calendar in time for the New Year. I had the La Voix calendar last year and loved it. I actually published a blog post about it at the start of last year https://overtherhinestonerainbow.blog/2020/01/05/make-a-date-with-la-voix-lavoix-happynewyear-calendar/ This calendar looks of the same quality and has some amazing photographs. If you manage to get your hands on one then do so and enjoy the glamour throughout the year. It certainly cheers up my kitchen wall.
Do you have any traditions or superstitions over New Year? I would love to hear if you continue any traditions that have been in your family. Do you know why you do them?
I have started transferring dates into my new diary. I adore stationary and love nothing more than a blank diary or notebook ready to be filled with possibilities. I received the lovely Wrendale designs diary as a gift. I love the animal illustrations and it seems sturdy enough to sustain a lot of use during the year, well we can only hope can’t we!!
Even in this digital age I still love a diary and a calendar and hope I always will. Do you still use either or both? Would love to see what calendar or diary will see you thorough the year and again wish you lots of love and prosperity for 2021.
