So the UK went into the next stage of the traffic light system to unlocking the country after the Covid19 lockdown. This stage allows hairdressers, beauticians, non essential shops to open and allows outside serving of food and drink, as well as meeting up with up to six other people or two households outside.
I personally have really missed going out to coffee shops. The buzz of hearing people chatting, the noise of the coffee machine and passing the time people watching is one of my favourite past times.
One of the places I like to visit when I want to go a little out of town is ‘Claytons Corner’ at Howsham. I discovered this lovely café last year just after the first lockdown and blogged about it at the time Claytons Corner Cafe Blog Post I was so impressed last time by their organisation in the other lockdowns that I had no hesitation thinking it would be of the same higher standard in subsequent lockdowns.
On the day we visited the sun finally decided to make an, albeit sometimes brief, appearance and so with my warm coat on we headed out to Howsham. It was so lovely to just get out and when we arrived at the venue there were already quite a few people seated in the courtyard. Everybody was outside in their own small groups and safely spaced. Some had arrived in cars and many had arrived on bikes. All wore masks walking around and followed the instructions for entering the building to order. There are plenty of tables of varying size and spaced out around the courtyard and the grass verges. There are a couple of summer houses and arbours, as well as trees for shade.
Pirate Mick and I had a latte and a caramel latte which was hot and tasty and served in a disposable cup. There is a wide range of food available and observing the orders going out everything looked delicious.
Later Pirate Mick and I went to a regular haunt of ours, Millfields Hotel in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. In fact it is where we held our wedding reception over 22 years ago and it was one of the first places we visited after the first lockdown last year, August 2020 and is very close to our home so perfect for a meet up or an after work drink. Pirate Mick and I like to visit on our anniversary but this could not obviously happen last year and this year we were still in the recent lockdown but managed to visit not too much later for a drink on the outside patio. How lovely it was to be back and the time we visited, late afternoon, there were plenty of tables available. Food is available to order but we just had a fruit cider and Bacardi and coke to drink, whilst watching the world go by.
I have certainly missed the coffee shops and the bars and hopefully it wont be long until we can meet inside again for food and drink so we are not having to watch the weather report with close interest and being able to think about what to wear without knowing you need a hat, scarf, gloves and winter coat! Have you visited a favourite bar or coffee shop yet? If so I hope it is the start of many more. After the year we have had we deserve it!
