Come From Away Musical Theatre : Welcome To The Rock ~Irene Sankoff and David Hein

September 11th

Twenty years ago, 2001 I remember arriving home from work and Pirate Mick said something terrible was happening and switched on the television. Unfolding in front of us was the horrific terrorist attacks on the United States of America.

Come From Away Musical Theatre

I have obviously heard about the musical ‘Come From Away’ as I am sure you know I adore musical theatre.

Come From Away is the telling of a true story of when 38 planes were ordered to land in Gander. However I admit the subject of the terrorist attacks is not something I would imagine would make a feel good, uplifting musical.

The small town in Newfoundland, Canada, were called on to care for the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of the passengers, crew and animals travelling on the planes. It was such an uncertain and frightening time for them all.

The musical opened on Broadway in 2017 and the West End London in February 2019. In 2019 it won the Laurence Olivier award for best new musical. After closing throughout most of 2020 and some of 2021 reopening at ‘The Phoenix Theatre’ in London on 22nd July.

The Film ‘Come From Away’ Musical Theatre

Filming took place of the musical theatre performance in Broadway and has been released by Apple TV. Music and lyrics are by Irene Sankoff and David Hein and the director is Christopher Ashley. The performance is 100 minutes with no interval.

The cast of around twenty actors of variable age play multiple characters, portrayed by a change of clothes or mannerisms. They never leave the stage and use hardly any props.

The musical tells a story of heart warming good people thrown together in audacity. About building bonds that will continue from giving everything they have and expecting nothing in return.

The pace does not stop. There are no stand out songs that will leave you singing after, apart from maybe ‘Welcome to the Rock’. However there is the euphoric uplifting heart warming feeling throughout that even from the most atrocious acts, kindness, love and hope will prevail.

Have you seen ‘Come From Away’ either in the theatre or on Apple TV. Did watching the show on television have the same impact as watching it in the theatre? Love to hear from you.
