Vintage Recipes For Plum Bread ~Food

Whilst decluttering I came across my Nana’s old cookery notes and recipes book.  It is very old but I cannot bare to throw it out as it is in my Nana’s handwriting.  I thought I would share some of the recipes with you.  I hold no responsibility for the outcome of the recipes and I will copy it as it is written.  Nana seems to have had a particular taste in plum breads as the following recipes are all variations of that recipe.

Mrs George’s Plum Bread  (Mrs George was the lady who lived over the road from my Nana from the 1950’s and worked as a school cook)

2 lbs Self Raising Flour
1 1/2 lb Mix Fruit
1 lb Castor Sugar
1/2 lb Marg
2 oz Lard
1/2 pint Warm Milk
2 Eggs
2 Tablespoons Syrup

Mix all dry ingredients together, mix in fats, melt syrup in warm milk then add to mixture with beaten eggs.
Bake 2 1/2 hours at Nr 2.

Plum Bread (Nobody credited to this recipe)

1 lb Mixed Fruit
8 ozs Sugar
3/4 PT Cold Tea

Mix above and leave to soak over night

Beat in 1 Egg
1 Tablespoon Treacle
Fold in 1 lb S.R.Flour
1/4 teaspoon Mixed Spices

Grease 2 Tins
Bake 1 hour at Gas 5
Down to 3 for 30 Mins

Plum Loaf

1 lb S.R.Flour
1/2 lb Sugar
1/2 lb Currants
1/2 lb Sultanas
1 oz Yeast
2 oz Peel
3 oz Marg
1/4 pt Milk
1/4 pt Tepid Water
1 Egg
Pinch of Salt

Cream yeast with tepid water and leave. Rub flour, marg and salt.  Add fruit and sugar. mix to soft consistency with yeast, milk and egg.
Bake 2 hours at Nr.3.

Plum Bread

1 lb S.R.Flour
1 lb Mixed Fruit
8 oz Sugar
4 oz Marg
Teaspoon NutMeg
Teaspoom Mixed Spices
1/2 pint Milk

Mix, leave overnight.  Bake about 2 hours at Nr.2.
